Last Saturday on April 26, 2014 there was an international day in the city where we live. The city is a port city which provides a wide range of maritime and logistics services. It is the largest port in Europe and ranks as one of the top 20 world’s busiest ports. It is also the heart of the global diamond industry, both in terms of polishing, processing and trade. With a population of half a million there are quite considerable number of expatriates living in the city. There is an international school called Antwerp International School which provides education from elementary to high school.
The school organized an “International day 2014” (http://www.ais‐antwerp.be/page.cfm?p=1505) where more than 25 countries participated. The event was colorful and there was exciting programs of music, dance and games for all ages. Each country was selling delicious food, refreshments and gift items from 10:00 to 18:00 hrs. As an employee of the school one of us got a slot representing Ethiopia. The opportunity was used to introduce Ethiopian culture and promote tourism. Posters of Axum, Lalibela, Sof Omar and Ras Dashen were hanged. A coffee ceremony was held. Ethiopian delicious cousins (doro wet, kitfo, tibs …) were part of the event where many appreciates the taste. Tej is also present.
One unique thing in the Ethiopian booth was the autograph signing. Abinet was surrounded by children and teen agers to put his signature like a great author or celebrity. His signature is ኢትዮጵያ in one of the world’s oldest script, Geez. Its uniqueness attracted teen agers to have it in their autograph. While our friend is busy signing we were busy explaining about Geez script, Ethiopia’s diverse languages and cultures. Though we were in short of leaflets to promote tourism we tried to sell Ethiopia in the event. Having such opportunity it would be naïve to leave without talking about present day Ethiopia. It is with this sprit we prepared a flyer which briefly informs about current Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is determined to get the people out of poverty through economic development. The economy is booming and there are mega projects under construction. These are engines of development. Roads, railways and power generating plants are some among the game changer projects. One which stands tall of all projects is the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). So the flyer tries to illustrate the grand project. Distributing the flyer for those who visited the Ethiopian booth we explained about GERD. We briefed the source of Abay (Blue Nile), the power generating Dam project, its progress, the impact, the project financiers and so on. We created some awareness in that part of mini world. This is our first time which motivated us to do more in the future. Imagine the outcome if such things are replicated in all parts of the world.
Recalling that 80% of the aid goes through the government budget or Multi-donor Trust Fund, she said that the money was properly used for the planned projects. She said “we successfully implemented the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) in the past five years, 2009-2013”. According to Ambassador Hebberecht, road infrastructure, agriculture, food security and good governance were some of the major areas of cooperation under the Fund. The original allocation was 634 million Euros but the amount was increased by an additional 45 million Euros for regional programs and another 40 million Euros for maternal health. The Ambassador added that “the government had good achievements in Education, Health, Water Sanitation and Infrastructure which the European Union also supports.” She disclosed that at the completion of the 10th European Development Fund, the EU had pledged another 745 million Euros for the 11th EDF to be implemented from 2014 to 2020. This will be allocated to agriculture, and food security, incorporating productivity, as well as conservation and management of natural resources, health and the private sector. The pledges will also cover road infrastructure and renewable energy sectors, she added.

Addis Ababa, 17 April 2014 (WIC) -The European Union (EU) yesterday announced a €40.2 million grant to the Ministry of Health and UNICEF through the “Enhancing Skilled Delivery in Ethiopia (ESDE)” project.
This new funding from the EU will be used to scale-up maternal health and new-born care for a three year period (2014-2016). Of this grant, €20 million is allocated to the MDG Pool Fund of the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and the remaining half to UNICEF.
This new maternal health initiative between the EU, Ministry of Health and UNICEF represents one of the largest grants to maternal health ever provided to Ethiopia.
Aimed at scaling up services to mothers and new-borns, the ESDE project will be implemented jointly by the Ministry of Health and UNICEF, with the support of other development partners and health professional societies working in the area of maternal and new-born health.

At the project launch, Dr Kesetebirhan Admassu, Minister of Health said, “The government of Ethiopia is rapidly expanding access to basic health services to communities to prevent maternal and new-born deaths. With the strong commitment of our government and the sustained support of all our partners such as the EU and UNICEF, we can speed up the reduction of maternal and new-born deaths even further.”

The ESDE project is expected to benefit 625,000 mothers and new-borns annually from improved access to maternal and new-born health services – a quarter of annual national deliveries. In the three year implementation period, the project will support close to 2 million mothers and new- borns.
The joint initiative aims to strengthen maternal and new-born health in Ethiopia by supporting the health system to achieve national targets and Goals of MDG 5 by increasing access to and utilization of quality maternal and new-born health services for mothers and new-borns in the coming three years.
While MDG 4 (reduction of child mortality) has already been attained three years ahead of time, MDG 5 (improvement of maternal health) remains the only health related MDG goal that is not on track as we approach 2015.
According to the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey of 2011, Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is 676 per 100,000 live births while the expected MDG 5 target is to reach the level of 267 per 100,000 live births by 2015.

Ambassador Chantal Hebberecht, Head of the European Union Delegation to Ethiopia, said, “While Ethiopia has made tremendous progress on most health indicators, improving maternal mortality rates remains a distinct challenge. I am therefore happy to announce that the European Union has made available a €40.2 million grant for Ethiopia to accelerate progress in maternal health by jointly working with the Ministry of Health and UNICEF.”

In Ethiopia, up to 15 per cent of mothers and new-borns suffer serious complications that require referral to facilities providing comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care (CEmONC) services including caesarean sections, blood transfusions and emergency laparotomy. However, the availability of CEmONC has been limited with only over a hundred hospitals having the capacity to provide the service.
The 2011/2012 Health Management Information System (HMIS) report of the Ministry of Health states that only 20.4 per cent of women delivered in health facilities.

To increase access, the MoH has committed to the improvement of services based on the Health Sector Development Plan (HSDP) through the construction of over 800 new primary hospitals [one primary hospital per woreda (district)].
The construction of over 200 hospitals has already been initiated in the various regional states and is expected to be completed soon 2012/13 Annual Review Meeting (ARM) Report, MOH.
The hospitals need to be equipped with basic supplies and equipment to provide maternal and neonatal care including equipment for basic operation facilities and essential neonatal care equipment.

In order to sustain gains made so far and to scale up the provision of health services, the ESDE project will provide:

•obstetric and new-born care supplies and equipment for 500 health centres and 50 hospitals
• operation theatre equipment for 30 primary hospitals
• training for 5000 health extension workers in community based new-born sepsis management
•obstetric and new-born care training for 250 doctors and health officers from 100 hospitals
•emergency obstetric and new-born care training and supportive supervision for 1000 midwives and nurses

“We commend the European Union for such a critical and timely intervention and the Federal Ministry of Health for its focus on maternal and new-born health.
UNICEF is firmly committed to the successful implementation of the project prioritizing the hard to reach and vulnerable women and children,” said Dr Peter Salama, UNICEF Representative in Ethiopia. (Diretube)

Cities in lower-income countries are rapidly catching up with the world’s top business capitals, according to a new report.

Chicago-based consulting firm A.T. Kearney is predicting the next generation of global cities, based on the speed with which they are catching up to world capitals. The “Emerging Cities Outlook,” released Monday, analyzed 34 cities in low- and middle-income countries, measuring development in business activity, innovation and ability to attract people to live there.

“As physical distances become less relevant and global competition intensifies, cities in low- and middle-income countries will increasingly jockey for position with one another and with cities in higher-income countries,” Andres Mendoza Pena, a coauthor of the report, said in a press statement.

The Emerging Cities Outlook is part of a wider report on the world’s most globally-connected cities, measuring them by business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience and political engagement. New York, London and Paris took the top spots.

Bloomberg notes that the top-tier cities have remained fairly static since the index started in 2008, making Beijing’s entry into the top 10 this year an indicator of the Chinese capital’s remarkable rise. “As a whole cities are improving, so they all need to run to keep up,” Mendoza Pena told the news agency.

Take a look below for the report’s top 10 emerging global cities, and find out which metropolis is the fastest-rising star.

AddiAbaba: April 14, 2014 (FBC) – As dusk falls on Addis Ababa, it is easy to spot the shadows of the giant cranes that are busy laying the rails for Ethiopia’s ambitious light-rail transit system.

The $475 million project, being executed by China Railway Engineering Corp, will soon have Chinese-made trams ferrying passengers across the length and breadth of the Ethiopian capital.

The tramcar order won by China CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles, a division of China CNR Corp, in November, however, is much more than just the supply of 41 trams. It marks a major milestone in the shipping of products with real, embedded technology to Africa, sources say.

“It is a milestone for us as it gives us a breakthrough in the dynamic African market,” says Liu Gang, general manager of the international division at CNR Changchun Railway.

According to Liu, the first batch of trams will be delivered in August for test operations of the light train system, which is scheduled to commence by the end of this year. “It is also our first major order from Africa,” he says.

CNR Changchun is one of the two major tram manufacturers in China along with CSR. Both the companies were part of the erstwhile China National Railway Locomotive & Rolling Stock Industry Corp and created as separate entities in 2000.

The company started exporting trams in 1995 and now has clients spread across Australia, Brazil, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Liu says international trade was not that significant before 2004. “Until then, our overseas business was less than $500 million.”

Last year the company bagged overseas orders worth $900 million and had exported more than 100 trams with an accumulated value of more than $4.5 billion.

“Africa contributed $100 million in the first year of our business on the continent,” Liu says.

Talking about the tramcar order, Liu says, the first big order came from China Railway Engineering Corporation, the main contractor of the Addis Ababa light train project. The project, designed as a cross, with horizontal and vertical railway lines passing through Addis Ababa, is expected to reduce the serious traffic congestion in the city.
